Researchers have found a link between the gut microbiome and the onset and progression of some neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs). The metabolite DHPS produced by gut microbes has been connected to ALS, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease in humans. The presence of certain bacterial taxa in the gut, such as Bilophila and Desulfovibrio, is associated with lower levels of DHPS in stool samples of patients with NDDs. This accumulation of bacteria can lead to hydrogen sulfide, which is linked to mitochondrial dysfunction and NDD hallmarks. The study suggests that understanding the role of metabolites in the gut microbiome could lead to improved diagnostic tools and treatments for NDDs.
