A recent study published in Diabetes Care examined the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cognitive and neuroimaging outcomes in dementia-free adults. MetS is a public health concern characterized by vascular and cardiometabolic risk factors. The study used data from the UK Biobank and found that participants with MetS had lower gray matter, total brain, and hippocampal volumes, as well as increased white matter volume compared to those without MetS. These individuals also exhibited poorer cognitive performance. The study suggests a link between MetS and poorer brain health, highlighting the need for further research on improving MetS to enhance brain health.
