The Dietary Guidelines for America recommend limiting saturated fat to less than 10% of total calories, based on the outdated diet-lipid-heart hypothesis that saturated fats cause heart disease. However, recent scientific studies have shown that saturated fats do not increase the risk of heart disease. The hypothesis was initially proposed by Ancel Keys in the 1950s, but subsequent research has disproved its validity. Studies like the PURE study and others have not found a correlation between saturated fat intake and heart disease. The demonization of saturated fats over the past decades may have been misguided, as natural fats are essential for a balanced diet.
