A team of researchers led by Penn Medicine received a $10 million grant to study the link between traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). The researchers aim to uncover the biological mechanisms of TBI-related neurodegeneration (TReND) using over 1,000 tissue samples. The new initiative, TRANSFORM-TBI, will investigate why TBIs increase the risk of ADRD and identify factors that may increase the risk for developing ADRD. The research team, consisting of 26 investigators across 12 sites, will evaluate neuropathological changes after various types of TBIs to tailor clinical trials for therapies to individuals’ specific brain injuries.
