A rare genetic mutation called the Christchurch mutation has been found to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease in a large extended Colombian family. Researchers identified 27 individuals in the family who carried both a genetic variant guaranteeing Alzheimer’s and the Christchurch mutation. Those with the mutation developed mild cognitive impairment at 52 and dementia at 54, while those without it showed signs at 47 and 50, respectively. Surprisingly, individuals with the Christchurch mutation had higher levels of amyloid but lower levels of tau, suggesting a potential protective effect. This research provides hope for delaying the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s disease.
