Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is a severe autoimmune disorder in children that can lead to early organ damage. The European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) highlighted the importance of identifying predictors to prevent damage at their 2024 congress. New research presented at the congress focused on factors associated with damage accrual in cSLE, particularly corticosteroid regimens and maintaining low disease activity. The study found that corticosteroid exposure and disease activity levels were significant predictors of damage in children with cSLE. The findings suggest the need for updated treatment protocols that limit corticosteroid use while effectively managing disease activity to reduce damage risk.
