A recent assessment in Ireland found that nearly 60% of radiation exposure in the public is due to radon gas, a major cause of lung cancer. Medical imaging and exposures contribute to 10% of radiation doses. The assessment, conducted by the EPA and HIQA, also revealed that over 99% of average radiation doses come from natural sources and medical exposures like X-rays and CT scans. Radon and Thoron gases are significant contributors to radiation exposure, while cosmic radiation, food, and drinking water also play a role. Steps like testing for radon and reducing exposure are crucial to prevent health risks. Compliance with regulations has led to a decrease in radiation exposure from medical imaging.
