Menopause is the cessation of menstruation around ages 45-55, caused by declining hormone levels. Perimenopause precedes menopause and can last for years, during which estrogen levels fluctuate and symptoms like hot flashes occur. Hormonal therapy was popular until a 2002 study linked it to health risks, causing a decline in use. However, recent studies are prompting a reevaluation of hormone therapy for managing menopausal symptoms. New treatments, including nonhormonal options, are also emerging.
