A study published online in Cancer found that among US veterans diagnosed with lung cancer, those who underwent screening before diagnosis had a higher cure rate and were more likely to be diagnosed with earlier stage disease. This study was conducted from 2011-2018 within the Veterans Health Administration health care system. Patients who underwent screening had higher rates of stage I diagnoses, lower rates of death from any cause, and lower rates of death from cancer over five years compared to those who did not undergo screening. The study emphasizes the importance of lung cancer screening for early detection and improved outcomes.
