A retrospective analysis of a large cohort with low screening uptake found that lung cancer screening was associated with earlier-stage diagnoses and improved survival. The study assessed the impact of lung cancer screening among Veteran Health Administration patients diagnosed with lung cancer between 2011 and 2018. Screened patients had higher rates of stage I diagnoses and better overall and lung cancer-specific survival compared to unscreened patients. The study suggested that lung cancer screening could lead to reductions in all-cause mortality and lung cancer-specific mortality. The authors hope these findings encourage wider adoption of lung cancer screening in clinical practice.
