A recent study shows that engaging in a specific exercise routine for one year around retirement age can preserve leg strength for up to four years. This is important as leg muscle strength is a strong predictor of mortality in older adults. The study involved 369 recent retirees who were assigned to lift heavy weights, do moderate-intensity circuit training, or maintain their usual physical activity levels. The researchers found that heavy resistance training preserved leg strength better than other types of exercise. This study suggests that retirement-age individuals should consider incorporating heavy resistance training into their exercise routine for long-term health benefits.
