The study by Jing Zhang and Yongze Li from Shenzhen University Medical School and China Medical University respectively, shows an increase in the prevalence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) among people aged 65 and older. This indicates significant improvements in the care received by individuals with T1DM, leading to longer life expectancy with fewer complications. However, challenges remain in optimal blood glucose control, especially among older populations due to changing metabolism and other age-related factors. Guidelines need to be updated to address these challenges and reduce inequalities in T1DM burden among older individuals in different income regions. The study underscores the need for improved management strategies, investment in health resources, and targeted guidelines for older people with T1DM.
