A sexually transmitted fungal infection called Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII (TMVII) has been confirmed in NYC, marking its debut in the U.S. The infection, primarily affecting men who have sex with men, was identified in a man who developed skin rashes after traveling to Europe and California. Although the infection responded to treatment, it took months to heal completely. Health experts urge individuals experiencing itchy eruptions in the groin area to see a doctor, as the infection may be misdiagnosed. Physicians are advised to ask patients about rashes in sensitive areas, especially if they have recently traveled or are sexually active.
