Prof Mary Horgan has been appointed as the interim Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health, following the departure of Prof Breda Smyth to RCSI. Prof Horgan, a professor of infectious diseases at UCD and Mater Hospital, has extensive experience in healthcare and previously served on NPHET during the Covid-19 pandemic. The appointment was approved by the Cabinet, with Health Minister Donnelly praising her expertise and leadership skills. Prof Horgan’s appointment comes after her role in leading the design of a new health threats agency. Originally from Kerry, she has a strong background in infectious diseases and medical leadership, making her well-suited for the CMO role.
