A study found a significant association between fructose and fructan malabsorption in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Among 186 patients, 38.2% had fructose malabsorption, 48.9% had fructan malabsorption, and 22.6% had both. Those who tested positive for one carbohydrate were almost twice as likely to test positive for the other. The authors recommend considering fructan malabsorption in patients with positive fructose results, and vice versa. The study, led by Twan Sia, MD, was conducted in a US medical clinic and published in BMC Gastroenterology. Limitations include a limited patient population and a shorter hydrogen breath test duration compared to other studies. No funding was received for the study, and one author disclosed consulting for pharmaceutical companies.
