Using fixed-ratio insulin combinations (FRC) can reduce side effects in treating diabetes, making clinicians more willing to consider these drugs. Dr. Liana K. Billings presented at the ADA 84th Scientific Sessions, highlighting the advantages of FRC, such as reduced nausea and increased convenience for patients. Studies show FRCs like insulin degludec/liraglutide (IDegLira) have lower rates of nausea and vomiting compared to other medications. Physicians must consider how side effects influence patients’ adherence to therapy. FRCs also lower hypoglycemia risk and treatment burden for patients. Research also supports cost-effectiveness and safety of FRCs in managing type 2 diabetes. The session also addressed concerns about SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1s in surgery.
