Developing pre-symptomatic diagnostic tools for Alzheimer’s disease using long-read RNA sequencing

Researchers at the University of Kentucky Sanders-Brown Center on Aging are developing a pre-symptomatic disease diagnostic tool for Alzheimer’s disease. They are using cutting-edge long-read sequencing technology to analyze RNA isoforms from the human genome in aged frontal cortex brain tissue. The study identified 99 RNA isoforms associated with Alzheimer’s disease and discovered five new, complex RNA variants from mitochondrial DNA. These findings could lead to more precise disease treatment and diagnosis for various human diseases. Larger studies are needed to further understand RNA patterns in complex diseases, and deep long-read RNA sequencing will be an essential tool for that research.
