A recent study found that children exposed to air pollution in the womb are at a higher risk of developing mental health issues during adolescence. The study focused on how pollution during pregnancy impacts mental health, specifically psychotic experiences, depression, and anxiety. Researchers analyzed data from over 9,000 participants in the Bristol Children of the 90s birth cohort study. They found that even small increases in fine particulate matter during pregnancy and childhood were linked to higher risks of psychotic experiences and depression. Exposure to noise pollution in childhood and teenage years was also associated with more anxiety symptoms. The findings suggest that reducing pollution could improve mental health outcomes, particularly for vulnerable groups like pregnant women and children.
