A study presented at ENDO 2024 found that children who are sedentary for more than six waking hours a day have an increased risk of fatty liver disease and liver cirrhosis by young adulthood. Sedentariness was found to be a causal factor in liver damage. The study analyzed data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, showing that each additional half-hour spent sedentary above 6 hours increased the risk of fatty liver disease. Engaging in at least 3 hours of light-intensity physical activity per day was found to reverse liver damage. The findings highlight the importance of reducing sedentary behavior in children and increasing light-intensity physical activity.
