Cannabis Use Nearly Doubles Risk Of Severe COVID Infection, Hospitalization: Study

admin

Researchers have found that cannabis use doubles the risk of severe COVID infections and hospitalizations. Factors such as age, smoking history, BMI, and comorbidities like diabetes can increase susceptibility to severe COVID-19. A study in JAMA Network Open from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that cannabis users with COVID-19 had a higher risk of hospitalization and ICU admission. This contradicts previous studies suggesting cannabis benefits for COVID-19. The study analyzed electronic health records of COVID patients from BJC HealthCare hospitals in Missouri and Illinois. Results showed cannabis users had an 80% increased risk of hospitalization and a 27% increased risk of ICU admission, even after considering other factors.
