California lawmakers passed a $211 billion budget for 2024-25, rejecting Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposal to cut in-home supportive services for low-income older, blind, and disabled immigrants without legal residency. The budget plan draws more from the state’s rainy-day fund and reduces corporate tax deductions to prevent cuts to health and social services. Advocates applauded the rejection of the cut to the in-home services program, which helps individuals stay out of costly nursing facilities. The governor has not decided whether to use his line-item veto authority. Lawmakers also accepted delaying food assistance to low-income immigrants without legal residency ages 55 and older.
