A study by UC San Francisco and the San Francisco VA Health Care System found that 13% of older adults are diagnosed with traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to falls. Contrary to previous studies, the research showed that females, whites, and wealthier individuals had a higher risk of TBI. TBI can lead to serious conditions like dementia, Parkinson’s, and cardiovascular disease. Factors like being healthier and more active may increase vulnerability to TBI in older adults. The study highlights the need for evidence-based guidelines for post-discharge care and prevention of TBI-related conditions in the growing population of Medicare enrollees.
