The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved an artificial pancreas system developed by the University of Cambridge for use by individuals with type 1 diabetes aged 2 and older, including during pregnancy. This Android app, called CamAPS FX, allows a compatible insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor to communicate, creating an artificial pancreas. The system, developed by Cambridge spinout company CamDiab, has already been CE-marked for use in the UK and the EU. The creator, Roman Hovorka, expressed delight at the FDA approval and highlighted the extensive testing and effectiveness of the technology. The system is already in use in multiple countries, with NICE granting approval for use in the NHS.
