Researcher Irantzu Vergara from UPV/EHU studied the presence of antibiotics in vegetables and earthworms in the Basque Autonomous Community. The study highlighted the need for further research on the contamination of antibiotics in the environment. The methods developed by Vergara at UPV/EHU labs allowed for the detection of low concentrations of antimicrobials in plants and earthworms. The research found a transfer of antimicrobials and their derivatives from soil to vegetables, highlighting the issue of antimicrobial contamination. The accumulation of antimicrobials in earthworms was also observed. Continued multidisciplinary research is needed to address the long-term consequences of antimicrobial contamination.
