The South Can Be a Dangerous Place To Be Black and Pregnant

admin

In many developed countries, maternal mortality rates are low, with only 3 deaths per 100,000 live births in Australia in 2021. However, in the American South, particularly for Black women, this is not the case. In South Carolina, Black women are four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women. Discrimination is a significant factor in maternal deaths, with a third of deaths in the state being linked to discrimination. Improving cultural competency training for healthcare providers is recommended to address these disparities. The South faces high maternal mortality rates, with Arkansas having the highest rate in the US.
