The probable origin of stuttering in the brain has been identified by an international research group led by researchers from the University of Turku in Finland. Stuttering, a speech rhythm disorder, affects 5-10% of young children and can continue into adulthood, impacting individual’s lives significantly. Stuttering is now understood as a brain disorder related to speech production regulation. Researchers found that regardless of the cause, stuttering is localized in the same brain network involving the putamen, amygdala, and claustrum. This insight could lead to new medical treatments for stuttering, such as targeted brain stimulation. The findings were published in the journal Brain.
