A study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health investigated the factors involved in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 on commercial flights. It found that long-haul flights without enforced masking had significantly higher COVID-19 rates compared to flights with enforced masking. Each additional hour of flight without enforced masking increased the transmission rate by 1.53-fold. However, long-haul flights with enforced masking showed no transmission of the virus, even during meal service. These findings emphasize the protective effect of face masks against SARS-CoV-2 transmission on flights, highlighting the importance of strict masking protocols to reduce the risk of infection.
