FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — In this Healio Video Perspective from the Retina World Congress, Charles C. Wykoff, MD, PhD, provides an overview of the Bionic Eye System for late-stage retinitis pigmentosa.
According to Wykoff, the device has demonstrated long-term safety and efficacy in four patients. He also discussed an update on software algorithms that have meaningfully improved the ability of patients to detect relevant objects and perform tasks.
“This is an important step forward because it shows us for these complex retinal prostheses that yes, we can certainly improve hardware over time, but thinking about ways to optimize software algorithms is just as important and in many ways maybe even more important,” he said.
