Researchers at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have discovered a new way to potentially slow down or halt the progression of Alzheimer’s disease by manipulating the plexin-B1 protein. The study, published in Nature Neuroscience, focuses on reactive astrocytes to understand brain cell communication. By enhancing the brain’s ability to clear amyloid plaques, the research opens new treatment avenues. The study validates multiscale gene network models of Alzheimer’s and emphasizes the importance of cellular interactions in developing therapies. The team hopes to develop treatments to prevent or slow down Alzheimer’s progression, with support from the NIH.
