A report on workforce data shows that Irish-born medical interns have higher retention rates in the country’s health system compared to interns from other regions. The head of the HSE unit analyzing the medical workforce emphasized the importance of increasing the number of Irish graduates to improve retention. The report also highlighted the high number of young doctors leaving the country after their intern year, but many eventually return. Efforts are being made to increase the number of EU places in Irish medical schools and fund additional medical places in Belfast. Additionally, criticisms of the health professions admissions test (HPAT) have led to calls for alternative ways to broaden access to medical school places.
