New research suggests that some patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) who died after life support was withdrawn may have survived and even recovered to at least partial independence if treatment had continued. The study, conducted with data from the TRACK-TBI project, found that delaying decisions on life-support withdrawal could benefit some patients. However, predicting outcomes for severe TBI is still challenging, and there are currently no precise guidelines to determine recovery likelihood, leading some families to make decisions on life support within 72 hours of injury. The study included over 1300 patients with severe TBI and found that a cautionary approach towards life support withdrawal may be warranted until more accurate prognostic tools are developed. Various experts hailed the study’s findings as important for improving outcomes for patients with severe TBI.
