The Labour Party has pledged to clear the backlog of NHS patients waiting more than 18 weeks for treatment within one parliament, but experts say this will be challenging to deliver. Health professional bodies and think tanks are calling for sufficient funding, staffing numbers, and support for the workforce to ensure this goal can be met. The British Medical Association’s council chair Philip Banfield emphasized the need for better pay, conditions, and support for NHS staff. The Royal College of Surgeons of England is also calling for additional funding to increase NHS capacity. Delivering on this promise will require more than just new equipment.
