An international team of rehabilitation experts has agreed on standardized labeling for spatial neglect, a common disorder following neurological injuries that affects awareness or response to stimuli. The consensus, reached through a modified Delphi method involving 66 experts, established “spatial neglect” as the standard term for the condition. Characterized by a lack of awareness of objects on the side opposite a brain lesion, spatial neglect has been described using over 200 different labels, causing challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Standardizing the terminology will improve communication among clinicians, patients, and families, facilitate literature searches, and enhance targeted interventions for survivors of stroke and traumatic brain injury.
