How Metabolic Syndrome, Obesity Impact Breast Cancer Risk

admin

Postmenopausal women with higher metabolic syndrome scores, regardless of obesity, were more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancers with poor prognoses. Conversely, those with obesity, regardless of metabolic syndrome, had a higher overall incidence of breast cancer, but these were more likely to be good-prognosis cancers. The study included 63,330 postmenopausal women without prior breast cancer, assessing the relative contributions of metabolic syndrome and obesity to breast cancer outcomes over more than 20 years. The findings suggest that targeting obesity alone may have a greater impact on breast cancer incidence, while targeting metabolic syndrome may help identify women at increased risk of poor-prognosis breast cancers.
