GP leaders are calling for stricter sanctions against patients who commit violence against doctors and their teams. They are also asking for more support for surgeries to address the increasing number of incidents in general practice. At a recent conference, GPs shared their experiences of violence from patients, leading to a motion to relax the criteria for inclusion in violent patient schemes. The meeting also urged all UK governments to increase funding for these schemes and for the BMA to lobby for harsher sanctions against perpetrators. A recent investigation found that the number of violent incidents in UK general practices has nearly doubled over the past five years.
