A plant-based diet rich in flavonoids can help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Flavonoids are natural components found in fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and beverages such as tea and wine, with antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. A study with over 100,000 participants showed that increasing daily intake of flavonoid-rich foods by one serving can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by 6%. Participants with higher Flavodiet scores had a 28% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Foods like black or green tea, berries, and apples were associated with lower risk. However, the study’s findings may not be generalizable to all populations and there is a chance of misclassification in flavonoid intake values.
