Fish Oil Supplements May Raise Heart Disease, Stroke Risk In Healthy Individuals

Fish oil supplements have been known for their cardiovascular benefits, but a study suggests they may have different effects on healthy individuals versus those with pre-existing cardiovascular diseases. Regular use of fish oil supplements was associated with a reduced risk of disease progression and death in individuals with a history of cardiovascular diseases, but an increased risk of first-time heart disease and stroke in healthy individuals. The study, based on data from over 415,000 participants, found that women and non-smokers had a higher risk of disease progression with fish oil supplements, while men and older participants had a lower risk of death. Limitations of the study include not accounting for the dose or formulation of the supplements and the majority of participants being white, which may limit the generalizability of the results.
