The FDA has approved Onyda XR, a liquid nonstimulant medication for treating ADHD, making it the first of its kind. The drug can be used alone or in conjunction with stimulant medications in children aged 6 and older. Onyda XR offers a convenient option with nighttime dosing to help individuals better control their ADHD symptoms. However, it is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to clonidine and may cause decreases in blood pressure and heart rate. Common side effects include somnolence and sedation. The drug is set to be available in pharmacies by the second half of 2024.
