Does poor sleep hit obese teens harder?

The study published in JAMA Neurology evaluated the impact of sleep duration on cognitive function in adolescents with different levels of adiposity. The results showed that overweight or obese adolescents experienced greater cognitive deficits after sleep restriction compared to those within a healthy weight range. The study used total body fat percentage as a measure of adiposity, highlighting the limitations of using BMI alone. Inadequate sleep had a more significant negative impact on cognitive function in overweight or obese adolescents, particularly in areas such as cognitive flexibility, attention, and processing speed. Adequate sleep did not affect cognition in adolescents within a healthy weight range.
