A study from the University of Bristol found that exposure to SARS-CoV-2 in the womb or as a newborn can lead to delayed social development and respiratory issues in children. The research, published in eClinicalMedicine, showed that children exposed to COVID-19 during pregnancy or shortly after birth may experience long-term impacts on their development and breathing. While overall development at two years did not differ between exposed and non-exposed children, those with COVID-19 exposure had a slightly delayed social-emotional development and an increased risk of breathing issues. Further research is needed to fully understand the effects of perinatal exposure to the virus on children’s health and development.
