Cardiovascular disease is the cause of 40 percent of deaths in Europe, with 10,000 deaths per day and four million per year. The World Health Organization is calling for a 25 percent reduction in salt intake to save 900,000 lives by 2030. High salt consumption in Europe leads to hypertension, with most countries exceeding the recommended maximum intake. This increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. Men are more likely to die from cardiovascular diseases than women, and there is a significant geographic divide in death rates between eastern and western Europe.
