A recent study examined the cardiovascular burden and natural history of the V142I variant of the transthyretin gene among US Black carriers in mid to late life. This genetic variant is a common cause of transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis, leading to a higher risk of heart failure and mortality. The study analyzed data from over 23,000 Black participants and found that carriers of the V142I variant had a decreased lifespan compared to non-carriers. Early detection and management of this variant could potentially increase longevity in the Black population. However, further research is needed to understand the complex factors influencing the disease and its outcomes.
