Children born via C-section are more than double the risk of getting measles after vaccination compared to those born naturally, according to researchers from the University of Cambridge, UK, and Fudan University, China. A single dose of measles vaccine is 2.6 times more likely to be ineffective in children born by C-section. The study suggests that children born with C-sections should receive two doses of the vaccination for robust protection against measles. The increased risk of measles among cesarean birth children is believed to be linked to differences in the development of the gut microbiome, which can impact the immune system’s response to vaccines.
