A study by Rutgers Health found that blood pressure medications more than double the risk of life-threatening bone fractures in nursing home residents due to impaired balance and low blood pressure. The increased risk is especially high in patients with dementia and high blood pressure. The study analyzed data from nearly 30,000 elderly patients in long-term care facilities and found that those who began blood pressure medication had a significantly higher 30-day fracture risk compared to those who did not. The findings suggest that reducing medication use and providing better support could help prevent falls and fractures in nursing home residents.
