New research from King’s College London has found that ancient viral DNA sequences in the human genome are linked to major psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression. These sequences, known as Human Endogenous Retroviruses (HERVs), were previously thought to be junk DNA with no important function. However, recent advances in genomics research have revealed that specific HERVs expressed in the human brain contribute to susceptibility for these conditions. This study analyzed data from genetic studies and autopsy brain samples to identify five HERV expression signatures associated with psychiatric disorders. Further research is needed to understand the precise role of HERVs in mental health conditions.
