Almost 3,500 new hospital beds to open between now and 2031

The Government has announced plans to open an additional 3,438 acute inpatient beds in hospitals across Ireland by 2031, with 929 replacement beds also included. Since 2020, 1,218 new beds have been introduced, with a commitment to deliver 4,367 beds by 2031. The HSE Dublin and Northeast region will see the greatest increase, with Cork University Hospital promised the most new beds. By 2031, there will be 2.6 acute inpatient beds per 1,000 population. Health Minister Stephen Donnelly stated that this plan will have a positive impact on patients and healthcare workers, alongside investments in community care and efficiency improvements.
