The American Organization for Nursing Leadership released a report in partnership with Laudio, a startup that provides software for nurse managers, revealing that nearly one-fifth of nurses are projected to leave the healthcare workforce by 2027 due to lack of support from their managers. Nurse managers play a vital role in nurse retention and patient outcomes, but high spans of control limit their ability to engage with their teams and reduce turnover. Adding assistant nurse managers to teams with high spans of control can help, but there must be clarity in their roles. Hospitals should also consider reducing nurse managers’ spans of control to improve retention.
