UK, EU face significant medicine shortages: Study

Research shows that patients in the UK and EU are experiencing shortages of essential medicines like antibiotics and epilepsy medication. Brexit has worsened the situation, with issues stemming from global problems like disruptions in imports from Asia due to COVID-19 shutdowns and inflation. The UK’s departure from the EU has caused additional challenges, including difficulties in approving medicines and accessing EU measures to tackle shortages. The number of alerts about impending shortages has more than doubled in the UK over three years, with medicine shortages being deemed unacceptable by health professionals. The Department of Health and Social Care reassured that most shortages have been managed with minimal impact on patients.
