New research presented at the ESCMID Global Congress in Barcelona shows that pet dogs and cats can play a significant role in the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The study found evidence of multidrug-resistant bacteria being transmitted between sick pets and their healthy owners in Portugal and the UK. Antibiotic resistance is a growing global concern, with the World Health Organization classifying it as one of the greatest public health threats. The findings emphasize the importance of monitoring antibiotic resistance in pet-owning households and implementing targeted interventions to safeguard both animal and human health. Good hygiene practices are recommended to prevent the transmission of bacteria between pets and humans.
