Seattle Children’s Research Institute and Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab partnered to research sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and found that genetic testing at birth could help determine a child’s risk of SIDS. The study, involving whole-genome sequencing of infants who died from SIDS, identified genes associated with the syndrome, particularly those related to oxygen levels in body tissues. This research could potentially help predict and prevent SIDS, which is the leading cause of death for infants in the U.S. The two organizations aim to bring preventative treatments to at-risk children and address health disparities in pediatric care, with Microsoft’s AI initiatives also focusing on deploying small language models for various applications.
